Artificial Intelligence (AI) is here and is an integral part of our everyday lives. We are surrounded by this technology from automatic parking systems to smart sensors for taking stunning photos, and personal assistance. Similarly, in education AI is taking off, and the traditional methods are changing fast.
AI or Artificial intelligence is defined as the ability of a computer program to do human tasks such as thinking and learning, and it is transforming the concept of K-12 learning.
With education becoming more convenient and more personalized, due to new AI education applications, the way students are learning is changing. Educational materials are becoming more accessible through smart devices and computers and students are no longer required to attend physical classes as long as they have computers and an internet connection. But what about the teachers? Modern education is continuously being asked to do more with less, putting more strain than ever on schools, school districts, but particularly, on educators.
According to a recent McKinsey survey, conducted in a research partnership with Microsoft, teachers are working an average of 50 hours a week—a number that the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Teaching and Learning International Survey suggests has increased by three percent over the past five years.
Further, the research goes on to suggests that 20 to 40 percent of current teacher hours are spent on activities that could be automated using existing technology. That translates into approximately 13 hours per week that teachers could redirect toward activities that lead to higher student outcomes and higher teacher satisfaction. In short, the research suggests that existing technology can help teachers reallocate 20 to 40 percent of their time to activities that support student learning.
